For the second time Berezniki hosted an International Festival of Sculpture from Sylvinite and Metal “The Permian Sea”. The organizers of the project are Administration of Berezniki and the Fund of Sculptors of Russia “Edinenie”, with the support of the program “Perm Krai is the Territory of Culture”. General sponsor was “Uralkaliy, Ltd.”

The festival was carried out from 01 through to 14 July 2013, and it became one of the most attractive events of the project “Berezniki is an Avant garde city”, which is realized within the program “A Centre of Culture of the Perm Krai”. The Festival took place in the open air in two categories:
- Sylvinite sculpture (potassic and magnesium salt), topic of the category is “Evolution of the Permian Sea”.
- Park sculpture from metal, topic of the category is “Youth. Romantics”.

The name of the festival was chosen by the location: Berezniki is situated on the territory of Verhnekamskoye field of potassic salts – deposits of the ancient Permian sea. The Permian sea existed long time ago, about 285 million years ago, in the age of the Perm period, it was spread on the great space of the Russian Plain from the Ural mountains to the Caucuses. Not deep and warm it was a house, and the ancestor of life. After drying up the ancient Permian Sea left enormous deposits of salt, bringing glory to the Permian land as a salt capital of Russia.

Sylvinite which is almost 300 million years old became a unique material for the sculptors. There is no place in the world where sculptors could work in such scale! A mass of sylvinite rock was elevated from the 300 meters depth from the mines of “Uralkaliy, Ltd”.
During the Festival there were master-classes for the local artists, and excursions to the work site of the Festival for the pupils.
